Lifeway Kefir -Blueberry Smoothie Review- Influenster

Influenster sent me coupon for a free Lifeway Kefir product so that I can try and review.

I’ve seen kefir being mentioned in articles & social media but never paid attention to what it actually was, I just knew it was good for you.At first I thought it was a grain , like quinoa but its not.

So what is “Kefir” ?( Pronounced key-fur or keh-fear) Kefir is a cultured probiotic beverage similar in taste and texture to drinkable yogurt, and made from milk fermented with kefir cultures.  Kefir contains more of this good for the gut bacteria than any yogurt you find on shelves.

Probiotics has also been talked about , so what is it? Probiotics, which literally mean “beneficial to life,” are live cultures that provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Most probiotics include the live active cultures often added to foods like yogurt. Researchers have studied bacteria extensively and considerable evidence indicates that there are several strains of essential good-for-you bacteria that have an ability to promote healthy gastrointestinal functions. Lifeway Kefir contains seven to ten billion CFU’s of 10 strains of bacteria, plus ProBoost, our exclusive pair of probiotics. That’s 12 live and active cultures per cup to produce a wide array of health benefits.

How do probiotics work ? Imagine the path that food takes through the digestive system. Food is passed through the mouth, enters the very acidic stomach and goes into the small intestine where the breakdown of bacteria continues. It is in these last two digestive processes that most bacteria is found. Depending on the balance of “good” and “bad” strains, bacteria can stay in the intestines for quite some time, taking up a significant amount of intestinal wall room and growing surpluses of harmful pathogens like Candida (an overgrowing of yeast). Each time you consume probiotics, they compete for this space and push the harmful bacteria out. For example, bacteria that can turn lactose (milk sugar) into lactic acid can lower the PH of the colon, thereby inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria.

REVIEW

When I found out I was receiving the free coupon I went to their website to see what kind of products they have.

kefir

So many to choose from ; Yogurt, Smoothies, Ice cream, Fro-yo, Cheese,

I realllllllly wanted to try the ice cream but the store that carried the brand only had yogurt & smoothies. I only eat greek yogurt because I like the thicker & creamy consistency but was willing to give this a shot. Well as I was walking to check out I realized the yogurt was expired only by a day but I decided to try the smoothie instead. They only had Whole Milk or Blueberry smoothie. So I chose the blueberry.

The products were about the same price of other brands. For the 32oz smoothie it was about $4.50.

I was skeptical because I didn’t know if the milk would upset my stomach ( it didn’t).

I brought it to work to have for breakfast. I opened it up and took a sip. I was torn because it tasted good but like it said it was a “drinkable yogurt” and I don’t really care for that consistency ( thicker than milk but thinner than yogurt). I stopped eating yogurt because it was so “watery” or almost drinkable, then discovered greek yogurt ( yummm)

I don’t think will buy the smoothies again, I prefer to make my own and didn’t care for the consistency. If it was on sale , I’d consider buying it and make popsicles with. If I ever spot the ice cream , it will be going in my cart so I can try .

Pros : Healthy, Tastes good, Variety of products,

Cons: Hard to find/ store only carries limited products, consistency, price

Disclosure: I received the products mentioned in those post complimentary of Influenster for testing purposes. All opinions are my own.
